Frequently Asked Questions about the RN to BSN Program
Where can I find information about the Winston Salem State University (WSSU) RN to BSN program?
You can visit the WSSU website for general information. We have also created an Information Packet with information specific to the cohort programs we will be offering through UNC Hospitals and Rex.
When will the onsite RN to BSN programs start?
Pending a successful needs assessment and SACS approval, the first UNCH cohort is scheduled to start in May 2013 at the UNCH campus. REX is planning a cohort that will begin in January 2013 (pending SACS approval).
What is SACS approval and when will we know if we have been approved?
SACS is an accrediting agency that must approve the WSSU programs for Rex Healthcare and UNC Hospitals. WSSU will submit the application for approval after they have completed a needs assessment and verified that we have enough people ready to enter the program. We expect to hear whether we have been approved or not by January/February 2013. We encourage you to not wait and to submit your transcripts for review, if you wish to be considered for the cohort beginning in May 2013.
What is a cohort?
A cohort model means that you attend classes with the same people through the entire course of the program. The WSSU cohort will meet once a week for 12 months. When you register for the program, you are committing to completing the ADN to BSN degree in its entirety during the twelve month period.
How many people will be accepted into each cohort?
We need a minimum of 20 and a maximum of 35 people to run a cohort. So far, more than 80 people have expressed a high interest in attending the May 2013 cohort at the UNCH campus.
What if we are not SACS approved?
If we are not SACS approved, we will not be able to host the WSSU RN to BSN program onsite. The Information Packet includes a list of other WSSU locations where the program has been approved. WSSU also an online program you may be interested in as an alternative. There are also RN to BSN programs offered by other schools.
I have already
registered to start another ADN to BSN program. I would rather
attend this program. Should I un-enroll and enroll in this
program instead?
Until we get SACS approval, there is no guarantee that we will have a program. We also have more interest expressed in the program than open seats, so there is no guarantee that you will be able to attend the Rex or UNCH cohorts this year. You are better off staying enrolled in your current program until you have a committment that you have been accepted into the WSSU, Rex or UNCH program.
My transcript is over 10 years old. Will WSSU accept these courses toward the RN to BSN degree?
Yes. WSSU has no time limit on transcripts.
What dates will the cohorts start?
If the programs are approved, the first REX class is anticipated to begin on January 15, 2013. Classes are projected to be held every Tuesday from 5:30pm – 9:30pm through December 17, 2013. The UNCH projected start date and day of the week for classes has not been determined at this time.
Does this program qualify for tuition reimbursement?
Yes. Contact Human Resources for more details. UNCH explains the possible options for Tuition Reimbursement via the Academic Assistance Program on the HR Intranet. For Rex, contact michelle.brooks-graham@rexhealth.com at 919- 784-4565.
What should I bring to the July 31 transcript review meeting?
Bring copies of all your transcripts, your current NC RN license, and a completed Personal Data Sheet.
I cannot attend the July 31 transcript review meeting with WSSU. What should I do?
You have two options:
1) Drop off copies of your unofficial transcripts and your current NC RN license, and a completed Personal Data Sheet in the NPDP&R Administrative Office before July 31 or bring to the 3rd Floor Classroom from 7:00am – 4:00pm on July 31.
2) Mail copies of your transcripts and your current NC RN license, and a completed Personal Data Sheet to: WSSU RN-BSN Director, Anderson Center Modular Unit – Room 237B, Winston-Salem, NC, 27100.
You will be notified via email in 2 weeks of any required general education courses you still need.
What happens after the transcript review process?
You will be notified by WSSU if there are prerequisite classes you must take before you would be eligible to enroll in the RN to BSN program.
When will I know if I have been accepted to WSSU and into the May 2013 cohort at UNCH campus?
WSSU will tentatively* confirm your admittance into the May 2013 cohort by January 31, 2013. *We will be notified by January/February 2013 whether the program has been approved by SACS.
