Health Unit Coordinator Hub

Welcome to the home page for the University of North Carolina Hospitals Health Unit Coordinators (HUCs)! Health Unit Coordinators work in areas in the hospital where nursing care is provided to a group of patients. They perform a variety of services for patients, visitors, and hospital staff.

These services include reception, communication, clerical duties, coordination of non-clinical tasks, and safety measures. Health Unit Coordinators receive new patients and give information and direction to visitors. They must have good communication skills as their duties include answering the telephone, providing information to doctors, nurses, and other health professionals, answering requests on the patient intercom system, and taking and delivering messages.

Health Unit Coordinators use several computer systems to order and coordinate patient services. They need a working knowledge of medical terminology, as they are responsible for transcribing physicians' orders, filing information in patients' charts, and scheduling tests and appointments for patients. Other duties include keeping records and keeping supplies and equipment stocked. The unit coordinator makes emergency code calls when directed to do so by nurses or doctors. The Health Unit Coordinator must be responsible, mature, dependable, and able to work with a variety of different people in a very busy area of the hospital.
