Trauma Program
Welcome to the home page for the University of North Carolina Hospitals Trauma Program! We are a State designated and American College of Surgeons (ACS) verified Level I Trauma Center. We receive patients from all over the state of North Carolina who require the highest level of specialized care for adult and pediatric trauma. In addition, UNC Hospitals, through the Trauma Program, operates as the lead agency for the MidCarolina Regional Advisory Committee (RAC), one of eight making up the statewide North Carolina Trauma System. The RAC serves as a method of standardizing trauma care throughout the state and providing support to the hospitals and EMS agencies that belong to it.
The UNC Trauma Program is a collaborative enterprise that incorporates the expertise of many different disciplines in order to provide the most comprehensive care possible for adult and pediatric trauma patients. Units involved in the care of trauma patients include Carolina Air Care, the Emergency Department, Intensive Care Units, Pediatric specialty units, Rehabilitation unit, and the North Carolina Jaycee Burn Center. In addition, the Trauma Program establishes and maintains all protocols and policies involved in our trauma process.
Our Trauma Coordinator oversees an extensive set of performance improvement standards in order to ensure that trauma patient care maintains the highest standards. This includes multidisciplinary care conferences and discharge planning. Our Outreach and MidCarolina RAC Coordinator provides education and resources to our own facility and to our other referring or RAC hospitals and agencies, such as through TNCC courses and “EMS Night Out”. She is also involved in supporting the development of the State Medical Assistance Team (SMAT) for our RAC in order to provide medical and decontamination assistance in the event of emergency or disaster event.
