CAMP: Clinical Management of Metabolic Problems in Patients with Schizophrenia: Switching to Aripiprazole versus Continued Treatment with Olanzapine, Quetiapine, or Risperidone

The Schizophrenia Trials Network is currently conducting a study aimed at better understanding the risks and benefits associated with antipsychotic use, especially with regard to the physical health outcomes of people with psychotic disorders. It is designed for people with schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder who may be considering a medication change because of weight gain, high cholesterol, or other health problems. All participants will receive a medication that is FDA-approved for people with schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder. The study involves the atypical antipsychotics olanzapine, quetiapine, risperidone, and aripiprazole.

Consistent clinical care is provided for study participants. There are 11 scheduled study visits: an initial screening and baseline visit followed by weekly visits for the first month and monthly visits for the next five months.

Study participants will receive an individual behavior therapy designed to help them lose weight. Study-related care and study medications are provided at no cost. Assistance with transportation is available.

To be included in the study, participants must:
• Have a diagnosis of schizophrenia or schizoaffective disorder
• Be 18-65 years old
• Be stable on current medication of olanzapine (Zyprexa), quetiapine (Seroquel), or risperidone (Risperdal), but have a problem with weight or cholesterol
• NOT have a diagnosis of mental retardation, pervasive developmental disorder, delirium, dementia, or amnesia
• NOT be pregnant or breastfeeding
