Patent Foramen Ovale in Stroke or TIA

The Department of Neurology, together with the Department of Cardiology at UNC Hospitals, is currently enrolling patients who have had a stroke or a transient ischemic attack (TIA or mini-stroke) and who have a patent foramen ovale (PFO) or "hole in the heart" for the CLOSURE I trial. This trial will compare closure of the PFO with a new device with best medical therapy and is being run at 100 centers throughout the country.

To be enrolled in the trial, patients must meet specific criteria. Patients or providers may refer patients for evaluation at the UNC Stroke Clinic. Please contact Susan Wilson at 919-843-2387.
