Hospice

UNC Hospice

Hospice is derived from the same root word as "hospitality" and "hostel." It dates back to early times as a shelter for weary travelers on long journeys. UNC Hospice provides support and care for people in the last phases of incurable disease so that they may live as fully and comfortably as possible.

UNC Hospice recognizes that dying is a part of the normal process of living, and focuses on maintaining the quality of remaining life. UNC Hospice exists in the hope and belief that through appropriate care, and the promotion of a caring community sensitive to their needs, patients and their families may be free to attain a degree of mental and spiritual preparation for death that is satisfactory to them.

UNC Hospice serves people of all ages with limited life expectancy in Chatham, Orange and surrounding counties within a one-hour drive of the office located in Pittsboro in the former Chatham Mill Building. Contact UNC Hospice at:

How Hospice differs from other types of health care:

  • Hospice offers comfort care rather than curative treatment. We seek control of pain and the other symptoms.
  • Hospice treats the person, not the disease.
  • Hospice seeks quality of life for the remaining day, week or month.
  • A physician must certify that the patient probably has is months or less to live.
  • Hospice considers the patient and family as a unit of care.
  • Nursing services are available 24 hours a day.
  • Hospice patients do not need to be "homebound."
  • Anyone can make a Hospice referral.
It is the policy of UNC Hospice to provide care according to the physician's order and the patient's need.
