Your Health Care Team

The doctor who has the overall responsibility for your care is called the attending physician. The attending physician may be a full-time faculty member from the UNC School of Medicine or a part-time faculty member with a practice in the community. Your attending physician will introduce him/herself to you. Talk to your attending physician about any problems you are having. Because UNC Hospitals is a teaching hospital, you may have more than one doctor on your health care team. You may see a resident physician, in addition to your attending physician. A resident has already graduated from medical school and is working here to get additional specialized training. A medical student may also visit you. This student has already completed at least two years of medical training and is working under the direct supervision of a physician. Nurses and other health care professionals care for you too. If you have any questions or concerns, talk with your attending physician.
