UNC Hospice volunteers come from varied backgrounds and life experiences. Their reasons for joining our team are as varied as their lives, but they all share a strong sense of compassion and a desire to lessen the burden of others. The many skills they have to offer are matched to important work within our hospice program.
A volunteer’s time commitment is individually determined by the volunteer's interest and hospice needs. UNC Hospice strives to tailor the volunteer experience to meet the goals and availability of our volunteers as well as the needs of our patients and families. In general patient care volunteers give 3 to 4 hours a week when assigned to a patient.
Patient Care Volunteers complete an extensive training course. In class they become familiar with the hospice concept of patient care and examine their own attitudes and life experiences. The volunteers participate in communication training and learn more about the physical/medical, emotional, spiritual and social needs of hospice patients and families.
Program Support Volunteers are invited to complete the entire volunteer training course, but are only required to complete a one-hour orientation and specific job training.
Although UNC Hospice volunteers may be asked to participate in special projects, their responsibilities generally fall into the following areas:
Some things Patient Care Volunteers may do:
• Give companionship & supportive listening
• Help record the patients' life stories
• Stay with patient so caregivers can go out
• Read to patient
• Play games with patient/family
• Sing/play music
• Watch TV or view films
• Run errands
• Do light housekeeping
• Prepare light meals or snacks
• Take patient outside
Some things Program Support Volunteers may do:
• Assist with clerical tasks
• Assist with community outreach (e.g. community bereavement and organizing community events,
planning events, public speaking)
• Assist with special events
