Flexible Spending Accounts
UNC Health Care offers employees a flexible spending account benefit under the North Carolina Flexible Benefits Program (NC Flex). Flexible Spending Accounts allow an employee to set aside a predetermined amount of dollars on a pre-tax basis to pay for qualified expenses. This plan is administered by Aon Consulting. The NC Flex Flexible Spending Accounts are available to all regular employees who work 20 or more hours per week.
The effective date of this benefit is the 1st day of the month after the date of hire or eligibility change. Enrollment must be completed online.
The NC Flex program offers two types of flexible spending accounts: Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA) and a Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account (DDCFSA).
Health Care Flexible Spending Account (HCFSA)
The Health Care Flexible Spending Account allows employees to pay for qualified medical expenses on a pre-tax basis. This is accomplished by the employee selecting a predetermined amount of dollars to be deducted from each paycheck on a pre-tax basis and deposited into the employee's Health Care Flexible Spending Account. When qualified medical expenses occur, the employee completes a "Claims Kit" and is reimbursed for the qualified expense with their own pre-tax dollars.
Employees may contribute a minimum of $120 per year or up to a maximum of $4200 per year to their Health Care Flexible Spending Account.

Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account (DDCFSA)
The Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account allows employees to pay for qualified daycare expenses on a pre-tax basis. This is accomplished by the employee selecting a predetermined amount of dollars to be deducted from each paycheck on a pre-tax basis and deposited into the employee's Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account. When qualified daycare expenses occur, the employee completes a "Claims Kit" and is reimbursed for the qualified expense with their own pre-tax dollars.
The DDCFSA primarily benefits employees with dependent children under the age of 13 and/or employees with an incapacitated spouse or dependent adult who lives with the employee at least 8 hours per day.
Employees may contribute a minimum of $120 per year or up to a maximum of $5000 per year to their Dependent Day Care Flexible Spending Account. If the employee is married and filing a separate tax return, the maximum contribution is $2500 per year.
