Full-Time, 30+ Hours to Temporary/Per Diem Appointment or to Part-Time, 1-19 Hours

This status change will affect benefits as follows:

Retirement:

  • Contributions to the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System will cease. Employees who desire to withdraw their contributions may download and complete an Application for Retirement Contributions Refund. Employees should read the instructions carefully to understand the Retirement Benefit and Tax implications of this decision.  The completed form must be Notarized and returned to the address listed on the form.
  • Please note that employees who withdraw their contributions will forfeit their rights to any benefits provided by the Retirement System.  Any service time accrued towards retirement will also be lost and employees will begin over as a new member should they return to participating State employment.  Employees should direct questions regarding the retirement account to the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System at 1-877-627-3287 or may refer to www.MyNCRetirement.com.
  • All 401(k), 403(b) or 457 plan contributions will cease. Employees may contact their account representative to discuss their options.

Health Insurance:

  • Health Insurance under the State Health Plan will cancel (1) on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs if the status change occurs prior to the 16th of the month or (2) on the last day of the following month if the status change occurs on or after the 16th of the month. Current participants may extend coverage under COBRA for up to 18 months. The State Health Plan will send an information and enrollment packet to the employee’s home address within 60 days of the insurance cancellation date. Employees may contact the State Health Plan at 1-888-234-2416 for more information about the COBRA continuation process.  

Disability:

  • Disability coverage offered through the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina (part of the Retirement System benefits) will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs.
  • Liberty Mutual disability coverage is contingent upon participation in the Retirement System, and will cancel on the last day of the month following the status change.

Life Insurance:

  • The Death Benefit offered through the Retirement System will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs.
  • Metropolitan Life Insurance will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs. Current participants may extend coverage under COBRA for up to 18 months. Employees may call 919-383-7421 for more information, please be prepared to provide current coverage information. 

NC Flex:

  • All NC Flex benefits will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs. In many cases, existing coverage can be extended under COBRA for up to 18 months. Each vendor is responsible for contacting the employee regarding continuation options within 60 days of the insurance cancellation date. Employees should contact the vendors directly for more information about the COBRA continuation process. For additional information please visit www.NCFlex.org.

MetLaw Plan:

  • MetLaw benefit will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs.

Employee Leave:

  • The employee will no longer qualify for the Employee Leave program.  Any current PTO, Holiday or Vacation Leave balance will be paid out in accordance with the Employee Leave policy.
