Full-Time, 30+ Hours to Part-Time, 20-29 Hours

This status change will affect the benefits as follows:

Retirement:

  • Contributions to the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System will cease.  Employees who desire to withdraw their contributions may download and complete an Application for Retirement Contributions Refund. Employees should read the instructions carefully to understand the Retirement Benefit and Tax implications of this decision. The completed form must be Notarized and returned to the address listed on the form.
  • Please note that employees who withdraw their contributions will forfeit their rights to any benefits provided by the Retirement System. Any service time accrued towards retirement will also be lost and employees will begin over as a new member should they return to participating State employment. Employees should direct questions regarding the retirement account to the Teachers’ and State Employees’ Retirement System at 1-877-627-3287 or may refer to www.MyNCRetirement.com.
  • Contributions to the State 401(k) and State 457 Plan are contingent upon participation in the Retirement System, so any contributions to these plans will cease. 403(b) Plan contributions are unaffected by this status change.

Health Insurance:

  • Health Insurance premiums will be adjusted to reflect current Part-Time employee rates. This rate change will affect coverage beginning with the first of the second month after the status change occurs.
  • Employees may choose to cancel coverage on themselves and/or their dependents by completing the form below. The effective date of this change can be the first of the month following the status change or the first of the following month. The desired effective date must be noted on the form. Please note that the only time employees are able to change from on plan option to another (e.g. from Smart Choice Standard to Smart Choice Basic) is during the State Health Plan Annual Enrollment period.
  • Verification of coverage or coverage cancellation is provided automatically by the State Health Plan once the cancellation is processed.

Disability:

  • Disability coverage offered through the Disability Income Plan of North Carolina (part of Retirement System benefits) will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs.
  • Liberty Mutual disability coverage is contingent upon participation in the Retirement System, and will cancel on the last day of the month following the status change.

Life Insurance:

  • The Death Benefit offered through the Retirement System will cancel on the last day of the month in which the status change occurs.
  • Metropolitan Life Insurance coverage will remain in effect but will change according to the employee's adjusted base, annual salary (e.g. 2 times employee's new salary). The monthly premium will change to reflect this change in coverage.
