The North Carolina Cancer Hospital at the University of North Carolina in Chapel Hill, NC has been designed to meet the needs of North Carolinians diagnosed with cancer or a blood disease. Our new state-of-the-art facility, which opened in August 2009, offers comprehensive inpatient and outpatient services and diagnostic, treatment and research support for patients seeking consultation and prescribed care for their disease. Whether you’re a recent graduate or a seasoned nurse – with or without oncology experience – at UNC Health Care, you’ll receive the hands-on oncology training you’ll need for successful practice. Our 6-12 week precepted orientation is based on your existing skills and experience, with supplemental and specialty courses designed to expand your knowledge. It’s a comprehensive, stimulating education that – like our care – is second to none. Outpatient Clinics – Open each weekdayHematology/Oncology ClinicThe Hematology/Oncology Clinic, located on the second floor of the hospital, offers 19 rooms for patient exam/consultation and two procedure rooms where bone marrow biopsies and lumbar punctures may be performed. The clinic is dedicated to providing consultative and ongoing medical oncology and hematology care, by appointment, to patients who require direct medical intervention or supportive care throughout the course of their illness. Nurses provide initial screening, and work with the health care team, patients and families to enhance care. Surgical Oncology ClinicThe Surgical Oncology Clinic, located on the second level of the hospital, offers 19 patient exam/consultation rooms and two procedure/recovery rooms in which minor operative procedures are performed. This clinic specializes in providing pre- and post-operative outpatient care to surgical oncology patients. As part of the continuum of care, surgical oncologists cooperate with medical and radiation oncologists to provide care for patients. Nurses provide initial screening and ongoing care for patients and families during their clinic visits. Multidisciplinary Oncology ClinicsThe Multidisciplinary Oncology Clinics offer 19 patient
exam/consultation rooms as well as work areas for physicians and staff.
These clinics provide coordinated visits for oncology patients, with a
focus on the tumor site and treatment plans designated after
consultation with surgical, medical, genetic and radiation oncologists.
Each multidisciplinary clinic is held on a separate day of the
week, Pediatric Hematology/Oncology ClinicThe Pediatric Hemaotology/Oncology Clinic is located on the first level of the hospital and has 10 Infusion/treatment chairs, seven exam rooms, a patient playroom, a school room, and work areas for physician, nursing and support staff. This clinic provides care to pediatric hematology and oncology patients, with chemotherapeutic and biotherapeutic care as prescribed by the specialized physician staff. It also provides for the active involvement of each patient’s family as well as support between episodes of care. Nurses in this specialized setting are actively involved in all aspects of the care delivery and are specifically trained in the administration of chemotherapy/biotherapy treatment for children. Outpatient Chemotherapy/Biotherapy Infusion – Open each weekdayThe Infusion Center, which consists of 48 chairs/stations, provides for the management and direct care of adult oncology patients undergoing chemotherapy and/or fluid/blood product replacement. Nursing staff who have received special training and certification in the administration of chemotherapy provide individualized care to these patients during each day of treatment. The clinic is operational during weekday hours and is supported by a specialized oncology pharmacy. Radiation Oncology – Open each weekdayThe Radiation Oncology Department provides radiation therapy and CyberKnife® intervention for oncology patients undergoing that modality as part of their overall treatment plan. The nurses in Radiation Oncology actively assist the patients and physicians during the consultative sessions and radiation treatment visits and provide support and direct care as needed. Radiation Oncology nurses are an integral part of the total plan of care and work closely with other members of the care team during each patient visit. |
