Coaching
Leadership and Professional Coaching
Coaching is a structured process and partnership that encourages leaders to produce breakthrough results in their professional lives. Coaches are trained to listen, observe and customize their approaches to individual leaders. During a coaching session, the coach will elicit solutions and strategies from the leader since the leader is seen as naturally creative and resourceful. The coach encourages self-discovery and holds the leader responsible and accountable for making forward progress toward that leader's goals.
All coaches can be consultants, but not all consultants are coaches. Consulting usually implies an expertise in a specific area. Consultants are more focused on giving advice, while coaches are focused on asking impactful questions that allow the person being coached to discover and determine what he/she wants to achieve while holding the person being coached responsible and accountable for solutions, strategies and actions set by him/herself.
The Learning & Organizational Development Department can combine leadership coaching with department and/or organizational consulting projects. Follow-on coaching is available for employees who participate in educational programs at UNC Health Care.
