CHAPEL HILL -- Dr. AnnaMarie Connolly, an assistant professor in the Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine and a physician at UNC Hospitals, is this year's recipient of the H. Fleming Fuller Award.

The award was presented to Connolly Nov. 18 at the UNC Health Care board of directors' annual banquet.

"Dr. Connolly has previously won awards for her teaching, and now she is being honored for her excellent patient care as well," said Gary Park, president of UNC Hospitals. "I can think of no one more deserving of the Fuller Award than her."

Given annually in memory of Fuller, a Kinston physician and founding member of the UNC Hospitals' board who died in 1986, the award recognizes doctors who demonstrate compassionate patient care and excellence in teaching and community service.

Many letters of nomination were submitted on Connolly's behalf. One came from Dr. William Droegemueller, chair emeritus of UNC's Department of Obstetrics and Gynecology and current director of evaluation for the American Board of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

"Dr. Connolly is an extremely bright, concerned and highly skilled professional," he wrote. "She is a superb teacher and an outstanding role model for young women entering academic medicine. AnnaMarie is charismatic and her enthusiasm is contagious. She is highly motivated as a clinician/teacher. Many medical students list AnnaMarie Connolly as the reason and the role model for their career choice of obstetrics and gynecology."

A native of Centerville, Mass., Connolly first came to UNC Hospitals in 1991 for residency training in obstetrics and gynecology, after graduating from the Tufts University School of Medicine in
Boston. Then she completed a fellowship in the Division of Urogynecology/Reconstructive Pelvic Surgery before joining the faculty in that division in 1999.

Some of her recent honors include selection as commencement speaker by the UNC School of Medicine's 2005 graduating class, the 2005 Leonard Tow Humanism in Medicine Award, which is given by the Arnold P. Gold Foundation, and the 2004 UNC School of Medicine Teaching Excellence Award. In addition, the UNC-Chapel Hill Medical Alumni Association recently selected her as the Wallace and Phyllis Baird Medical Alumni Distinguished Teaching Professor.
