John P. Lewis has been appointed chief financial officer for UNC Health Care, succeeding
W. Alan Stewart.
Lewis has served as chief financial officer and senior vice president at UNC Hospitals since October 2005, and prior to that he was chief financial officer at Rex Healthcare in Raleigh. His appointment to the new position is effective March 31.
“John Lewis has done an outstanding job for us, both at UNC and at Rex. He played a pivotal role in the reshaping of the Hospitals’ financials and leading – along with Mary Beck – our strategic planning effort,” said Dr. William L. Roper, chief executive officer of UNC Health Care and dean of the UNC School of Medicine.
In his new role, Lewis will oversee financial services for UNC Health Care and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill School of Medicine. He will work closely with the financial officers for UNC Hospitals, Rex Healthcare, UNC Physicians & Associates and the UNC School of Medicine.
UNC Health Care selected Lewis after conducting a nationwide search. Lewis started at Rex as an executive intern in 1996 and was hired as director for resource management in 1997. Prior to joining Rex, Lewis worked for the Boston Consulting Group in Toronto, Canada, and at SJS, Inc., a public policy and general strategy consulting firm in Providence, R.I.
A native of New York, Lewis earned a bachelor’s degree at Brown University in Providence, R.I. and an MBA in health care systems management from Duke University.
