The University of North Carolina Hospitals and UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy offer a 12-month ASHP-accredited PGY-2 residency in pharmacotherapy. Purpose statement Pharmacists completing this postgraduate training program will have the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary to provide pharmacotherapy services across diverse patient populations and in different practice settings as a member of multidisciplinary teams. A focus of the residency is development of decision making skills, literature evaluation abilities, and knowledge base that is transferable across practice areas. The resident will also attain comfort and expertise in provision of pharmaceutical education to health care providers, students, patients, and the community at large. The resident will cultivate a commitment to the profession of pharmacy, as well as personal and professional growth, as a self-directed, autonomous learner and a leader within the profession as a clinician, educator, and researcher. Patient Care Activities Patient care activities are designed as month-long rotations. All rotations will be tailored based on the individual resident’s interests, career goals, and previous experiences. Required Rotations:
Acute Care Medicine (3 months)
Family Medicine Inpatient Service (1 month)
General Internal Medicine/Internal Medicine-Nephrology (2 months)
Ambulatory Care Clinics (2 months plus
longitudinal clinic one ½ day per week)
Endocrine Clinic (1 month and longitudinal clinic)
Transplant Clinic
Critical Care (1 month)
Administration/research (December)
Orientation (July)
Elective Rotations:
Acute Care Medicine (e.g., cardiology, pulmonology, geriatrics,
infectious disease)—1 month
Ambulatory Care Clinics (e.g., geriatrics, pain, HIV, hematology/oncology)—1 month Resident’s selection (e.g., pediatrics, ID consults, pharmacogenomics, psychiatry, etc)—2 months
Pharmacy Practice Responsibilities
Residents will receive training and
orientation to the department's services during the first few weeks of
the program. Pharmacy practice responsibilities involve staffing in
decentralized pharmacist positions for three 1-week staffing blocks
over the course of the residency year and every third weekend.
Activities include, but are not limited to, verifying patient-specific
orders and medications, providing pharmacokinetic consults when
requested, answering in-depth drug information questions, attending all
adult codes as the pharmacy member of the code team, providing patient
education and solving pharmacotherapy situations as they may arise.
Additionally, residents are also responsible for staffing during one of
three major holiday blocks (Thanksgiving, Christmas, or New Year’s).
Residents will also participate in the after-hours pharmacy clinical
on-call program.

Benefits Each resident receives two white coats, office space, a tablet computer, travel reimbursement for selected professional meetings, and 15 days of paid time off (PTO). Residents are offered medical, dental, disability and life insurance policies and are covered under the University of North Carolina Hospitals comprehensive malpractice insurance. In addition, residents are given an academic faculty appointment as a Clinical Instructor at the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy. As faculty members and employees of UNC hospitals, residents are eligible for discounts throughout the UNC Campus and in the community. Qualifications Applicants must have completed a Doctor of Pharmacy program from an ACPE-accredited school or college of pharmacy, an ASHP-accredited pharmacy practice (PGY-1) residency and be eligible to practice pharmacy in North Carolina.
