Recreational Therapy and Child Life-Burn Center


 Recreational therapists provide treatment services to adult and pediatric patients in the N.C. Jaycee Burn Center.

Emotional Self-regulation SkillsThe application of specific treatment interventions is based upon the analysis of an individual's assessment and may include:

  • teaching strategies for coping with pain
  • relaxation techniques
  • procedural preparation
  • physical and emotional coaching during medical procedures
  • post-thermal injury adjustment counseling
  • reality orientation
  • sensory stimulation
  • school re-entry
  • mobility/discharge functional skills
  • emotional self-regulation skills

Recreational Therapy and Childlife Staff members are licensed Recreational Therapists who have additional certification as a Child Life Specialist. Services are provided in the patients' rooms, the Burn Center Playroom, the recreational therapy facilities in the N.C. Children's Hospital, the Patient Recreation Center or in the community. Burn survivors, between 7-15 years of age, are invited to take part in a camping experience known as Camp Celebrate.
