It is noon Friday Dec. 7, and Dr. Smithies is on his way to deliver his research lecture at the Karolinska Institutet, which awards the Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine. The Smithies are enjoying their stay, despite the rainy weather.

The Nobel Banquet was over by midnight, local time, about 6 p.m. in North Carolina. Smithies said people back home in North Carolina should take a close look, "because it's unlikely he'll get this dressed up again, any time soon."

Dr. Oliver Smithies receives the Nobel Prize medal from the King of Sweden, Stockholm, December 10, 2007.    Dr. Oliver Smithies with his Nobel Prize medal at the Nobel Foundation in Stockholm, Sweden Wednesday. A bust of Alfred Nobel is in the background. Dr. Smithies said he was a happy man, as he displayed his medal, 18 carat green gold with 24 carat plating.
