Healthy Food First Research Study

If you have high blood pressure and are struggling to eat healthy because money is tight, the Healthy Food First research study could help you!

The Healthy Food First research study is about improving participants’ health by increasing their access to healthy foods. Eating well and making healthy lifestyle changes can help you manage conditions such as high blood pressure. Our goal is to provide healthy food options and track how those food options affect participants’ health and well-being. This study provides healthy food options valued at least $40 per month and support from UNC Health Community Health Workers to improve healthy habits.

To learn more about this study, view our patient flyer [PDF].

We will measure health and well-being outcomes after participants receive one of four types of nutrition assistance for 6 or 12 months. The types of assistance each participant receives will be determined randomly. The four types of nutrition assistance are:

Healthy Food Box

A box filled with healthy food choices delivered every other week. These boxes will include fresh produce, whole grains, and healthy fats along with recipes.

Health Food Subsidy

A preloaded $40 card to be used for fruits and vegetables (fresh, frozen, or canned) with no added sodium, fat, or sugar. An additional $40 will be added monthly and any unused funds carry over for 2 months.
