When to See a Hematologist

Your primary care provider may refer you to a hematologist if you experience certain symptoms or after the results of a blood test. Hematologists have advanced training to diagnose and manage conditions that affect the blood, bone marrow, and lymph nodes. These conditions can cause symptoms like:

  • Abnormal bleeding and bruising
  • Frequent infections
  • Tiredness
  • Weakness

Conditions We Treat

  • Anemia, including iron deficiency anemia, sickle cell anemia, and vitamin deficiency anemia
  • Bleeding and clotting disorders, such as von Willebrand disease and hemophilia
  • Blood clots and deep vein thrombosis (DVT), when clumps of blood form in the body and may block healthy blood flow
  • Cancer of the blood or bone marrow, such as leukemia, lymphoma, or multiple myeloma
  • Thalassemia, an inherited blood disorder where the body does not make enough healthy hemoglobin, the red blood cell that carries oxygen

  • Acute lymphocytic leukemia (ALL)
  • Acute myeloid leukemia (AML)

  • Lumbar puncture, or spinal tap – Collects and analyzes fluid around your brain and spinal cord
  • Medications, such as pills, injections (shots), or infusion (IV therapy)
  • Phlebotomy therapy – Removes blood from the body to decrease red blood cell levels
  • Platelet apheresis – Removes platelets from the blood using a special machine
  • Vitamin and iron supplements – Increase levels of iron or other nutrients the body needs for healthy blood and bone marrow
