A comprehensive array of women’s specialty services in a modern hospital has become an exciting reality for our state’s women.  The N.C. Women’s Hospital provides the best, most technically expert care in an attractive environment, whether you are delivering a healthy baby or having a complicated, life-saving operation. The N.C. Women’s Hospital offers a full range of health care services designed to meet women’s needs throughout their life spans, from general obstetrics to the most sophisticated specialty care.
The NC Women's Hospital has received the prestigious international recognition as a Baby-Friendly® birth facility for the implementation of the Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative (BFHI), a global program sponsored by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the United Nations Children’s Fund (UNICEF).  The hospital has also received the North Carolina Maternity Center 5 Star Breastfeeding-Friendly designation.   
Ante-partum Unit
3 Women's is a 13 bed unit that provides high and low risk ante-partum care.  Staff is knowledgeable in the care of patients experiencing preterm labor, premature rupture of membranes, pre-eclampsia, placenta previa and more.  The staff is dedicated to the care of high risk ante-partum patients and their families.  They understand the special needs of our long term ante-partum patients and provide educational opportunities and group activities to make the most of their patient's stay.  Most of the staff are certified in neonatal resuscitation and attend training in fetal monitoring.

Labor and Delivery
L&D is a Level III referral center which provides care for low to high risk patients.  Approximately 3,700 babies are born each year at the NC Women's Hospital.  L&D has an interdisciplinary team of specialists who perform numerous high-risk procedures such as vaginal and abdominal cerclage placements, amniocentesis, and versions.  Fetal procedures inclusive of intrauterine transfusions, fetal shunt placements and exit procedures are also performed.  For the low risk population whirl pool tubs and wireless fetal monitoring is an option.  The unit consists of 15 labor and delivery rooms, 5 triage rooms, 3 operating rooms and a 2-bed recovery room.  Anesthesia coverage is provided 24/7.  Staff is certified in neonatal resuscitation, basic life support, advanced cardiac life support and has extensive training in fetal monitoring and obstetrical care.  The unit is highly supportive of skin to skin, baby friendly and rooming in.  The entire staff is extremely committed to the women of North Carolina and Family Centered Care.

Maternity Care Center
The Maternity Care Center is a 28 bed all private room unit; providing care for the postpartum patients in this Level III referral center, utilizing the couplet care model.  The Maternity Care Center has a Newborn Nursery unit to provide care for term newborn infants and stabilized premature infants.  The Newborn Nursery supports Family Centered Care by admitting all infants to the mother's room unless medically contraindicated.  The Maternity Care Center staff has a strong knowledge base in: postpartum care for vaginal and cesarean section patients, breastfeeding, late preterm infant care, normal newborn care and family teaching.  The staff is committed to family centered care and teaching using a baby-friendly approach including the "Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding".  Many of the nursing staff is IBCLC certified and certified in neonatal resuscitation.

Lactation Services
The Lactation Program staff provides breastfeeding services to breastfeeding mothers and their children in all areas of the hospitals, clinics and at home via the Warm Line.  All staff of the Lactation Department is certified by the International Board of Lactation Consultants Examiners (IBCLC).

GYN / GYN Oncology
6 Women's is a 22 bed unit dedicated to the advancement of patient and family care, education and research in the field of gynecology and gynecology oncology.  We care for the adult, middle age adult, and geriatric GYN/GYN Oncology patient.  Four beds are available for radiation therapy.  Our focus is to provide optimal care to persons with an actual and/or potential diagnosis of cancer.  Staff uses a team approach to facilitate appropriate and effective care.  Patients and families are encouraged to participate in their health care to maximize the patient self-care skills and promote healthy lifestyles.

UNC Hospitals Obstetrics Clinic
Hospital based obstetrical services include Maternal Fetal Medicine, Midwifery, Women's Primary Healthcare, and Women's Specialty Services.  Staff is trained to provide a wide range of services including high risk and normal obstetrical care, contraception, women's preventative health and gynecological care.  Prenatal and diagnostic testing, including genetic counseling, is available with our team of specialists in the UNC Hospital Ultrasound Clinic.  We place importance on teaching, counseling and working together with women and their families in designing the best health care plan for all women.
