N.C. Neurosciences Hospital

The N. C. Neurosciences Hospital is designed to provide advanced, patient- and family-friendly facilities that reflect UNC Hospitals' missions of patient care, teaching, research and community service. The $43 million facility opened in 1995 and is designed to accommodate the rapid changes occurring in the exciting field of neurosciences, from brain-mapping techniques and gene therapy of head-and-neck to the latest in psychiatric care.

The building includes psychiatry services, research laboratories, and expanded inpatient and outpatient clinics for neurology, neurosurgery and otolaryngology. It also includes UNC Hospitals Emergency Department and, on the eighth floor, the Herbert J. Proctor M.D. Memorial Aeromedical facility, home of UNC Air and Ground Transportation, our aeromedical transportation service. The facility was named to honor the late Dr. Proctor, a leader in aeromedical transportation and a well-known and respected UNC trauma surgeon.

In the N.C. Neurosciences Hospital, patients and their families will find rooms and common areas that more closely resemble a home than a hospital. Wood-paneled bed headboards conceal oxygen hookups and other medical equipment. Attractive colors, repeated in wall paper borders, give the hospital an open, warm and welcoming feeling.
