We're tobacco free!
UNC Health Care went 100 percent tobacco-free on July 4, 2007. While we have banned the use of tobacco products inside our buildings for years, this new policy prohibits the use of tobacco products anywhere on UNC Health Care’s property for employees, physicians, patients, visitors and anyone else on the property. Outlying and ancillary UNC Health Care facilities also operate as completely tobacco-free.
Resources available to you
As part of the tobacco-free initiative, UNC Health Care has made resources available to patients, visitors and employees to help them quit smoking and using smokeless tobacco products. Beginning July 4, UNC Health Care instituted new nicotine dependence protocols for both inpatients and outpatients.
Our new Nicotine Dependence Program offers special support to all of our patients who use tobacco. The specialists in the program first determine whether a patient needs assistance while they are hospitalized. Aids available to assist patients include both nicotine replacement therapies (patches, etc.) and extended counseling with physicians and specialists working in the Nicotine Dependence Program.
A nicotine dependence outpatient clinic opened in July in our Department of Family Medicine. If you would like help in the fight to quit smoking or using other forms of tobacco, dial 919-966-0210 to schedule an appointment to meet with one of our doctors. You can also dial 919-843-1521 to learn more about the outpatient clinic and the services it offers. “Quit Now NC!” and the tobacco-use "Quit Now Line" are also available to assist you in the fight against tobacco at 1-800-784-8669.
We also recognize that visiting family and friends in the Hospitals can be a stressful time, so a number of “Emergency Relief” packets are available for our visitors who need to fight the urge to smoke while visiting UNC Hospitals. We anticipate that these packets will be available in the lobby concourse, through our Guest Services Department and in the Emergency Department. Nicorette gum is also available in the Cranberry Corner Gift Shop, located in the lobby of the N.C. Memorial Hospital.
Our specialists in the Nicotine Dependence Program are also available to speak to your community groups about the dangers of tobacco use. If you would like to have us speak to your group or society, dial 919-843-1521.
We are also joined in our July 4 tobacco-free move by Rex Healthcare, Chatham Hospital and other triangle medical centers. UNC Health Care, Rex Healthcare and Chatham Hospital join more than 35 percent of hospitals in North Carolina, and a growing number of health care facilities across the nation that, have already made the decision to go tobacco-free. This decision directly supports the mission of UNC Health Care, Rex Healthcare and Chatham Hospital to promote health and wellness in the community.
A recent report by the U.S. Surgeon General documents the serious and deadly health effects of involuntary exposure to tobacco smoke. Secondhand smoke is a major cause of disease, including lung cancer and coronary heart disease, in healthy, nonsmokers.
UNC Health Care’s tobacco-free policy is intended to eliminate the potential for exposure to second-hand smoke and smokeless tobacco products on our Health Care System’s campuses. Thanks for your support as we transition a tobacco-free UNC Health Care!
