flowersThe UNC Hospitals Ethics Committee (HEC), a standing medical committee, is an advisory body with a broad, multidisciplinary membership. The HEC and the clinical ethics services it supports aim to assist patients and their families, clinicians, and other hospital staff in addressing the ethical challenges that arise in patient care at the bedside and at the departmental or institutional level.

The Committee offers the following services:

  • Ethics Education: Supplements and develops the clinical ethics education of the medical staff, other hospital personnel, and students, and offers outreach in ethics education to the community and the people of North Carolina. Click here for more information.
  • Policy Advisement and Review: Assists with formulation of policies and/or guidelines addressing ethical issues. This service is available for the revision or development of institutional, departmental or service-related policies.
